Blood Dungeon Chests, Keys, and Gold

Three currencies, randomised keys, and why map knowledge beats a loot spreadsheet.

Chests, Keys, and Gold in Blood Dungeon

Blood Dungeon runs on three pickups that do different jobs. Blood is experience: fill the bar, pause, pick one of three cards. Gold (coins) opens chests and pays for in-arena buys. Bones leave the run with you and go to the Dogmancer. Mixing those three into one “loot” pile is how first nights stall. This page is the loot map for arenas. Permanent shop notes stay on Bones & Dogmancer. Loop basics stay on How to Play.

Launch coverage from IGN, PC Gamer, and WayTooManyGames agrees on the shape: each named arena has a fixed layout, while keys, chests, and some pickups shuffle. That is why a Catacombs clear still teaches the next Catacombs run even when the key is not next to the same door.

Three currencies, three jobs

  • Blood — XP orbs from kills. Magnet-style upgrades enlarge the pickup radius. Blood does not open doors. It levels the build. See upgrade habits on Getting Started.
  • Gold / coins — the in-run wallet. Chests and some locked toys want coins. Game Informer noted Tombs as a map that buries coins so you often have enough to spend when a shop or chest appears. Other maps make coin tight; do not assume Tombs rates everywhere.
  • Bones — meta currency. They do not open Catacombs gates. They buy hearts, speed, jump, and extra weapon slots between runs.

Steam’s store line is blunt: collect Blood, gold, and bones. If a fan table lists a fourth “gem” currency, ignore it until the client shows it.

Altars, chests, and the bounce route

IGN’s preview with Mark Essen is the cleanest public description of altars. Chests show up at statically placed altars. Grab one, and another can appear at a different altar. The “meta” read is to bounce between those known spots instead of combing every pixel. Keys and locked doors still randomise on top of that, so an altar route is a habit, not a guaranteed chest-per-minute chart.

WayTooManyGames adds the door language you will actually swear at: timed doors, locked doors, and doors that shoot until you put them down. Key placement is “exceedingly randomised.” One key can spawn a screen from its door; another can serve a door you never find before the wave clock eats you. The practical rule is the same as IGN’s: keep moving between known value rooms, do not tunnel on a single missing key.

PC Gamer’s review matches that geometry: maps loop, item and key locations are mostly randomised, and knowing where health and explosives usually sit is the difference between the last boss and a death on the second. Layout knowledge is the loot skill. A spreadsheet of “chest seed 17” is not.

What chests actually give you

Public materials say hidden chests hold weapons and upgrades. They do not publish a drop table this wiki can copy. Treat a chest as a build roll, not as a named unique. After you unlock a bunkmate, that default can enter the shared pool — gas showing up for Gun Man after Hypnomancer is the example on Bunkmates. Opening chests is how those toys appear mid-run; it is not a second Bone Shop.

Game Informer called out two upgrade feelings that matter for chest and card luck: a basketball that sends orange balls bouncing through the room, and an upgrade that doubles everything. Those are review-confirmed toys, not a promise every chest contains them. If you never see basketball, you are not missing a secret door; the roll did not show it.

Weapon identities that are named in Steam achievements or kits — Machinegun, Magnum, Laser beam, Axe, Bounce balls, harpoons, shotgun, dual swords, webs, gas — live on Weapons. Do not invent a chest that “always drops Laser.”

Keys without a panic spiral

A locked door is optional pressure, not always the win condition. Named arenas still end on bosses at wave thresholds, not on 100% door completion. Beat Bosses is the combat page. Full-explore trophies exist — Multiheal (fully explore Boiler) and Crystalize (fully explore Flood) — so some nights you do hunt every corner. Most Catacombs learning runs should not.

If a key refuses to appear, leave. Bank Bones. The next seed will move the key. Standing still to “wait for the key room” is how density kills you. Movement is still the survival skill while you loot.

Map-by-map loot habits

  • Catacombs — learn altar bounce and two-exit routing here. First chests teach you that gold is a gate, not XP.
  • Pit / Corridor — tighter geometry. A chest behind a locked door is easier to skip if the choke is already full.
  • Boiler — industrial heat plus the Hypnomancer unlock on the second boss. Explore trophies come later; first visits are for the fight, not for 100% chests.
  • Tombs — coin-rich according to Game Informer. Spend when a chest appears instead of hoarding for a door you have not found.
  • Flood — water and oxygen. A chest underwater is a movement problem first. Leggy’s webs are the published extra route, not a loot multiplier.
  • Daily Dungeon — extra mode (Vampire Ring / Play the Daily). Treat it as a score-and-habit loop, not as a published 2x Bone farm.

What this page will not invent

No chest respawn timer. No gold-per-kill table. No “always open the red door first” seed. No character named Leech hiding in a chest — Leech is a Wyrm-under-30-seconds achievement. If Steam posts a patch that changes altar rules, read Launch Notes and the in-game tooltip, not an old demo recording.

Loot is how you roll a build. Bones are how you keep progress. Learn Catacombs altars, spend gold when a chest is on screen, and stop hunting a key that the seed did not give you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the difference between Blood, gold, and Bones?

Blood is XP for in-run upgrade cards. Gold opens chests and pays for in-arena costs. Bones persist and buy Dogmancer upgrades between runs.

Are chest and key locations fixed?

Arena layouts are fixed. Keys, chests, and many pickups randomise. IGN describes bouncing between static altars as the habit that still works when the key moves.

Do I need every key to beat an arena?

No. Bosses sit on wave thresholds. Full-explore trophies exist for Boiler and Flood, but a learning Catacombs run should not stall on one missing key.

What drops from chests?

Official copy says weapons and upgrades. This wiki does not publish a fake drop table. Read the card in front of you.
