How to Play Blood Dungeon
Core loop, movement, and upgrade basics for your first runs.
Blood Dungeon is a 2D platforming bullet-heaven game from Messhof, the studio behind Nidhogg. You move and jump while your weapons fire automatically. The goal of every run is simple: survive longer than the last one, bank Bones, and get stronger. The game rewards knowledge and movement skill more than reflexes — a player who understands the systems will consistently outperform one who relies on reaction speed alone. The game launched 25 August 2026. Runs are solo. Runs are single-player only.
The core loop
Each run follows this cycle:
- Choose a character — nine bunkmates total. Start with Gun Man (machine gun) or Barbarian (dual circling swords). Both sit in the bunkhouse. Leech is a Steam achievement, not a bunkmate: defeat Wyrm in under 30 seconds. See Achievements.
- Select an arena — start in the Catacombs, then follow the Steam achievement spine: Pit, Corridor, Boiler, Tombs, and Flood. The Daily Dungeon is extra (Play the Daily / Vampire Ring), not a seventh named stage.
- Survive waves — enemies spawn continuously; kill them to drop Blood.
- Level up — fill the Blood bar and choose from three random upgrade cards.
- Defeat bosses — every named arena has three bosses at set wave thresholds.
- Bank Bones — whatever you survive, you keep Bones to spend at the Dogmancer between runs.
Blood and levelling
Blood is the experience currency. When enemies die they drop Blood orbs that your character auto-collects within a small radius. Once the Blood bar fills you level up and are presented with three upgrade cards. The selection is random — you cannot control which options appear, only which one you pick.
Upgrades include weapon upgrades (damage, fire rate, reload speed, projectile count), new weapons, passive charms (hearts, movement speed, Magnet, Oxygen Tank), and equipment (Jetpack). Some upgrades are better than others depending on your current loadout. That is why the Bone Tracker and character tier list exist — to help you decide where to invest without inventing numbers the game has not published.
Movement is survival
Unlike most Vampire Survivors-likes, Blood Dungeon gives you precise platforming control. Your character can stick to walls and ceilings and move across all surfaces. Use this to kite enemies, access high chests, dodge projectiles, and navigate underwater sections in Flood. Mastering wall movement is not optional in some arenas — it is required to reach certain areas and avoid damage. Read Movement once Catacombs walls start to feel mandatory.
Weapons and auto-fire
Equipped weapons fire automatically without any input beyond moving. The game pauses briefly at each level-up. Early combinations that match published kits include Gun Man’s machine gun plus a circling melee drop, Skinja’s shotgun plus a long-range pickup, or Barbarian swords plus any gun. No combination is strictly best — synergy depends on the arena and the enemies you face. See synergies for what reviews actually name.
The Dogmancer and permanent progress
Bones collected during a run are added to your Bone Shop total the moment the run ends. There is no penalty for dying early. Visit the Dogmancer between runs to spend Bones on health, speed, jump height, and extra weapon slots. This wiki does not invent character shop prices. Hypnomancer unlocks from the second boss in Boiler, not from a made-up Bone cost. Full notes: Unlock Characters and Bones & Dogmancer.
Quick-start tips
- Stay moving — standing still after wave five is a death sentence. Keep relocating to avoid being cornered.
- Know your character — Gun Man and Barbarian are the starters. Unlock Baby after that. Bug (flight), Skinja (shotgun, cartwheels), and Leggy (webs) are later named kits, not first-hour picks. Two of nine bunkmates remain unnamed in public materials.
- Check the quest log — Hypnomancer is the second Boiler boss. Do not invent other prices.
- Prioritise weapon slots — two weapons from wave one beats a tiny stat. The second weapon slot is the most important early purchase.
- Learn arena themes — Catacombs first. Flood needs breath and webs. Boiler is the Hypnomancer gate.
Your first ten runs should focus on Catacombs layouts, enemy paths, and banking Bones for a Dogmancer slot. Do not worry about clearing high waves on night one. Do not hunt a bunkmate named Leech. If you want that trophy, fight Wyrm in Catacombs in under 30 seconds — that is the achievement, not a character.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How does levelling work in Blood Dungeon?
Collect Blood dropped by dead enemies to fill your Blood bar. When it fills you level up and choose from three upgrade cards. Upgrades can be weapons, weapon upgrades, passive charms, or equipment.
Can I control when weapons fire?
No — weapons fire automatically. Your only job is movement and positioning. The game is a bullet-heaven auto-shooter, not a twin-stick shooter.
What happens if I die early in a run?
You keep all the Bones you collected during that run. They go straight to the Dogmancer and can be spent on permanent upgrades for future runs.
Do all characters play differently?
Yes. Each bunkmate has a unique default weapon and a movement trait. Start with Gun Man or Barbarian. Leech is an achievement, not a character.
What is the Flood arena?
Flood is the sixth named arena on the Steam achievement spine. Half of it is submerged. Leggy’s climbable webs are especially useful because they work as platforms in water.
