Blood Dungeon Catacombs Arena
The first story map: wall climbing, early enemies, and the bosses that open Pit.
Catacombs is the first of Blood Dungeon’s six story arenas and the map you load when a new save begins. The game shipped on 25 August 2026 as a solo run. This map is single-player only, and this page is not a preview of upcoming content. Treat Catacombs as a classroom: it teaches wall climbing, readable enemy tells, and the first-boss unlock that opens the rest of the chain.
The shell of the map is mostly fixed. Once you know a shaft, a ceiling run, or a dead-end alcove, that geometry is still there on the next attempt. Item and key spots can drift, so a route is a search pattern rather than a copied speedrun line. Hidden chests sit off the obvious floor path. If you never leave the dirt, you will leave Bones and upgrades on the table.
Where Catacombs sits in the chain
Story arenas unlock by beating the first boss of the previous map, in this order: Catacombs, then Pit, Corridor, Boiler, Tombs, and Flood. The Pit achievement is the first Catacombs boss. That kill opens Pit even if you have not finished Catacombs. Stay longer if you want the later named fights and the timed Steam challenges tied to this map.
The Daily Dungeon is a separate mode. Vampire Ring tracks playing the daily. It is not the sixth story arena and it is not a replacement for Flood. Use the Arenas Hub when you need the full list, and Achievements when you are matching Steam names to fights.
Layout and the wall-climb lesson
Blood Dungeon is a platformer that happens to auto-fire. Catacombs is where that fact becomes muscle memory. You can stick to walls and travel the ceiling, then drop onto a pack or kite along a vertical face while bats miss the angle. The Movement guide covers the full kit. This arena is the drill: climb early, look up, and treat the floor as optional.
A practical first loop is simple. Sweep the rooms you can see, climb a known chimney, check a chest pocket, then return before you commit to a boss door. Because keys can move, do not freeze if a pickup is missing from last run. Sweep again. That habit scales into later maps where density punishes incomplete routes.
Falling is a cost, not a fail state, as long as you land on a climbable surface instead of a packed hallway. Practice recovering onto a wall after a drop. Pit will demand that recovery constantly; Catacombs lets you learn it with fewer vertical kilometres.
Early enemies
Steam’s own copy highlights bats, centaurs, and exploding eyeballs as the early mix. Use that roster as the teaching set, not as a claim that nothing else ever appears.
- Bats arc in and punish anyone who stares at the floor. Climb or drop so their pathing breaks.
- Centaurs stop to fire. That pause is a damage window for Gun Man’s machine gun or Baby’s magnum.
- Exploding eyeballs detonate on death. Kill them at range or step off the blast before the next bat pins you in the radius.
The Enemies page is the wider bestiary. In Catacombs the takeaway is positioning: walls deny ground pathing, distance denies eyeball pops, and motion denies bat piles.
Bosses and Steam names
Stick to named threats. Do not invent extra boss titles.
- The first Catacombs boss is the Pit achievement and the unlock for Pit. You can leave for the well after that kill.
- Wyrm is a Catacombs boss. The Leech achievement is beating Wyrm in under 30 seconds. Leech is an achievement name, not a bunkmate.
- Bone Snake is tied to Slow Enemies, also under 30 seconds.
- Decoy is the final Catacombs boss.
Fight craft — when to climb, when to drop, when to hold a ceiling lane — belongs on Beat Bosses. Catacombs is the readable map where those habits form. Polygon has named Bone Dragon as a late threat. This page does not assign that fight to Catacombs.
Characters and gear
You start as Gun Man with a machine gun, the starter PC Gamer and IGN both highlight. Auto-fire plus wall travel is enough to learn this arena. Barbarian’s circling swords help when bats collapse into melee. Skinja’s shotgun and ground speed are more than you need for teaching, but they still clear rooms. Baby’s magnum pokes centaurs from a safer line.
Leggy’s webs and Bug’s flight matter more once vertical wells and water show up. Hypnomancer gas unlocks on the second Boiler boss, so a fresh Catacombs save will not start with that cloud. Compare traits on Bunkmates, weapon roles on Weapons, and pairings on Loadouts. Early Bones are better spent on movement and survivability at the Dogmancer than on racing the whole chain in one sitting.
Chests, leaving, and what comes next
Hidden chests are the reason to wander. Full clears teach you to look behind a climbable lip before you assume a room is empty. That curiosity is what Tombs and Flood will tax later. If your goal is the next arena, beat the first boss and go to Pit. If your goal is Decoy, Leech, or Slow Enemies, stay and learn the vertical rooms until the timers feel honest.
Catacombs is live content, not a teaser. Play it solo, bank Bones, then choose whether the well in Pit or a Daily Dungeon session is the better next hour.
